This edition of Black Drama contains approximately 1200 plays by 201 playwrights, together with detailed, fielded information on related productions, theaters, production companies, and more. The database also includes selected playbills, production photographs and other ephemera related to the plays. 

Some 440 of the plays are published here for the first time, including a number by major authors.

The plays themselves have been selected using leading bibliographies and with the editorial advice of James V. Hatch, co-author with Errol G. Hill of A History of African American Theatre and a leading expert in this area. 

  

We have recently upgraded the PhiloLogic software used by Black Drama, enhancing performance and giving the collection a fresh new look. We have improved the search engine for better performance and introduced new toolbar navigation for easier browsing, but all other functionality of the collection remains the same. See the upgraded version of the database.

This version of the collection will remain active until March 1, 2009. After that time, any bookmarks or links you have into any page of the database will automatically redirect to the correct page in this upgrade, but you will need to note the new location and update your bookmarks accordingly.
